#Mixtape: @CakesDaKilla – #IMF

Following his last full-length, The Eulogy, which was released through Mishka Records in 2013, Brooklyn-based MC Cakes Da Killa spent 2014 dropping two mixtapes under his Hunger Pangs series. Now, kicking off 2015 properly, Cakes comes alive with his EP #IMF, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The EP features five tracks of thumping electronic instrumentation that blend with spaced out, near tribal elements, providing a proper platformula for Cakes’ hypnotic tales of beauty, lust, and wavey late night vibes.

#Mixtape/EP: DeShawn Timothy – #STAYINYALANE [@DeShawnTimothy]

Following the disbandment of the celebrated out hip-hop act Sgt. Sass, Philadelphia’s DeShawn Timothy (aka DT, D. Timmy) continues to advance with stylish rhymes and razor-sharp delivery, while putting a revitalizing stamp on rap music. DeShawn Timothy’s latest EP, #STAYINYALANE, lyrically clenches onto the fury felt from the group break-up but effortlessly lets go into a sea of playful reflection. Sharp word play is paired precisely with majestically crafted beats by production team God Ferrari. Records like “Frankly” and “Whisper” are sonically breathtaking. Undoubtedly, this is DeShawn Timothy’s best work to date.

The opening track, “Basics”, finds DeShawn Timothy nonchalantly flowing, weaving in and out of the beat seamlessly. By the hook, listeners feel the shift of emotions in DeShawn Timothy’s delivery, a switch to a rage ridden declaration. The next track, “Frankly”, holds onto the anger expressed in “Basics” but slowly dissipates into a melodic chill wave of 90s inspired boom-bap.  On “Whisper”, DeShawn Timothy floods the listener’s speakers with seductive rhymes of lust and sexual attainment. The hook will remain on the tip of your tongue for a solid week, promise.  Closing #STAYINYALANE is the record “Deep”  Lyrically to-date, the track is the rawest DeShawn Timothy has ever dropped.

Billboard Video Premiere:…e-video-premiere
Complex Premiere:…a-bitch-premiere

Kill Da Bitch can mean many things, but at the end of that day if you aren’t Killin Da Bitch, you may as well stay home and snuggle with a body pillow. On “Kill Da Bitch”, Sugur Shane lunges at you like an upset puma, spitting acid & clawing you to shreds with his rapid and cunty flow. The bass rumbles, the crashes deliver enough impact to shatter your mom’s fine China, and the levels of shade are at dangerous levels. How’d this battle turn into a fight?! On the flip side we finally see the release of “Buddah VS Sugur”, which was famously played by Total Freedom at Hood By Air’s showcase finale during 2014’s New York Fashion Week. The chants and stabs guide you while the distant air horns shriek at you drawing you into the circle at the center of the dance floor. This is the definition of a Vogue battle anthem. The EP is complimented by remixes from New Orleans natives Kid Kamillion & Jesse Slayter, Team Supreme’s power house Colta and M.O.D.’s #1 shooter Lil Texas.

Shane currently resides in Philly and draws heavily from 90’s dance music and hip hop, citing Gillete & Notorious B.I.G. as some of his major influences. The touted Butch Queen is a staple at Balls & Vogue nights up & down the East Coast, and is proceeded by his long list of collaborators & supporters including scene purveyors like Tom Stephan, Evian Christ, L-Vis 1990, Sam Tiba, Dubbel Dutch, Jubilee, Mike Q and Vjjuan Allure.. and thats just the tip of the iceberg. Shane truly possesses a very unique and animated delivery previously unseen. If you don’t recognize the realness, shade on you.
